A low carb (carb comes from carbohydrates) diet is based on proteins, fats, and very few carbohydrates. Practically you will have to use more proteins and fats in your meals but almost no carbohydrates. This diet is based on the theory that in prehistoric time man used to eat more proteins and managed to have full energy and a healthy body so specialist though they should reproduce that lifestyle. At first this diet was used to treat epilepsy in the Atkins hospital but nowadays doctors are against that theory; but there are a couple of things good about this diet: it prevents diabetes and increases your muscle mass.
How does it work?
When your body stops receiving glucose it starts to transform the fat tissue into energy. Then your fat is eliminated with urine. This diet has to be under strict medical observation and you need to make some blood tests at first to see if your health permits your body to induce the ketogenic state. In the ketogenic state you will eat no carbohydrates and you will lose fat very fast but until you reach that state you have to strictly choose your meals in order to eat as less carbohydrates as possible.
The low carb diet is perfect for someone who has hyperinsulinemia but people who are vegetarian or don't like cheese, meat or eggs should avoid this diet because it's very difficult for them to find other sources of protein.
The first thing you have to do when you start your diet is to read all the labels that are found on the food you buy to make sure there aren't any carbohydrates or at least any large amounts of carbohydrates. Then make a diet plan that includes the following products: all kinds of meat except liver, all types of fish, eggs (if you have a high cholesterol level only eat egg whites), all types of fat (butter, mayonnaise), fruits (no watermelon, bananas or other rich carbohydrate fruits). Remember that you are allowed to eat fruits only a half an hour before your meal.
It is strictly forbidden to eat: bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, carrots, sugar, beer or any food that includes the ones above. You shouldn't count calories but pay attention to how much you eat, don't eat until you can't move, eat rationally and results will start to appear. Don't eat too few calories because your metabolism will get slower and you will lose your muscles too. Pay attention to those low carb products, they may have a lot of calories and even if your desert is sugar free read the label and you might be surprised to see that it has more calories than a desert with lots sugar.
If you want to see more results add some exercise although some people managed to lose weight without any exercise but I suggest that you should do some workout. Have you ever seen a person who lost weight without exercising? They don't have any energy and don't even look fit, they are just slim. You don't want to look like that, and exercises don't just make you look better and lose more weight but also prevent some diseases like: diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, back pain, migraines, etc. In order to avoid low blood sugar during your exercises you should try planning your workout an hour after you had a meal or have a snack before you start.
Supplements help you a lot in low carbohydrates diets because you can get your vitamins and all the nutrients you need without eating more food, also they help in the first stage when you will feel headaches, fatigue or nausea. This diet is good even for people who drink alcohol but if they want results they should drink moderately. While some people have no results if they drink alcohol others might still lose weight if they add a few glasses a week.
After showing you all the benefits it's time to show you the bad aspects. Some of the adverse effects are: constipation and dehydration. If you suffer any illness that makes your fat being processed slower you shouldn't try this diet. Also if you have liver problems do not try this diet. Some specialists say that a low carb diet increases cholesterol levels. Also people believe that this diet lacks vitamins but that can be solved with supplements. Some types of cancer may appear if you eat too much cholesterol or saturated fats so keep that in mind. Other disadvantages are that if you completely give up your diet without gradually use carbohydrates in your meals you will start gaining weight very fast but that's what happens in any diet if you give up and start eating the way you ate before.
This diet may be suitable for some but others may experience negative effects, if you feel very weak after you started it seek medical help and choose another diet. If you feel very hungry during meals drink water, eat some cheese or drink some natural juice. You should eat your last meal before 19:00 and never forget about breakfast; actually breakfast should be the biggest meal you have. If you can't find any low carbohydrates products at work or school try to take food from home and don't be ashamed if your colleagues ask what's happening; explain everybody that you have to eat that in order to keep yourself healthy and as long as the place is filled with chips and other forbidden stuff you have bring food from home. When you go out avoid the bread, don't even look at it, don't order any potatoes; try to order fish and vegetables or chicken with salad.
Another problem with this diet is the people's opinion: they will tell you that you won't succeed because they think it's unhealthy to eat so much protein and you will get high cholesterol. Tell them that you went to the doctor and you have no reason not to try this diet. Also when you go to someone's house and you have to eat, instead of telling them that you are on a diet, tell them the doctor has advised you not to eat those types of food. I can only recommend you this diet if you are a meat lover or you want to lose weight without using your muscles so throw away those carbohydrates and start today!
